The Avro Vulcan Bomber
The Vulcan Bomber is about to celebrate its 50th Birthday this Summer. The Vulcan is based at RAF Lyneham and is now owned by the Sky Charity Trust who are based in Leicester.
The designer of this amazing aircraft was Roy Chadwick, he sketched out the design over 60 years ago, however in 1946 sadly Roy Chadwick died in a plane crash the following year and did not manage to see his masterpiece fly. His work was then picked up by Stuart Davies and it was then designed in the late 1940’s and was built by AV Roe & Co at its works at Chadderton, Manchester and Woodford Cheshire. The design was reworked in light of Ministry comments and then became conventional adopting a centre fuselage with four paired engines and a tail.
The Avro Vulcan is a delta wing subsonic Jet Bomber which was operated by the Royal Air Force from 1956 to 1984, the aircraft was kept as constant readiness and it could have been airborne within minutes to strike back if there was ever an attack from the Soviet Union during the cold war. This aircraft was also used in a conventional bombing role during the conflict with Argentina.
The Vulcan Bomber was about to become out of operation due to its high maintenance costs, the trust needed £300,000 just to keep this plane operational, however an anonymous donation was made for more than £400,000 and this has been used so the plane now can remain airworthy and be shown off at Airshows around the UK.
