Boscombe Artficial Surf Reef

The new Boscombe Surf Reef is attracting thousands of visitors to Bournemouth, the construction of the reef started in July 2008 and was completed in November 2009 and it is Europe’s first artificial surf reef.

The reef is 220meters offshore and it lies just east of the Boscombe Pier. The reef is made up of 55 giant sandbags, which have been pumped hard with sand and the reef itself is the size of a football pitch. The reef was built in two layers, the bottom layer, which sits on the sea bed and consist of 3 elements and the second layer of two elements that lies on the bottom of the large sandbags.

The artificial surf reef is not a wave machine, it does not create waves but it does act as a ramp and it pushes existing waves upwards and shapes them into better quality surfing waves, which should double the size of the waves and which also means that it doubles the amount of surfing days, the reef is designed to provide a grade 5 wave on a day that has a good swell and it is designed to make three waves, waves on the reef and two more good banks inshore on the beach, however in more calmer weather that you would get in July and August the reef will create a lagoon along the shoreline.

If you would like to try out the new surf reef you will find that there are shops down there that sell all the surfing materials from body boards to wet suits, you will also find cafes and restaurants if you fancy a drink or a bite to eat, or you could just sit on the lovely beach itself and relax.

Parking

Bournemouth does have ample parking, however during the air show this will be limited and the spaces will fill up quickly, we would advise that you get there as early as possible for a parking space, however extra public transport is available with more frequent services running during the air show.
